Latest local unemployment figures.

The latest unemployment figures for the Harrogate and Knaresborough constituency show a year-on-year decrease in those claiming unemployment benefits despite a small increase on the figures from last month.

Figures from the Government showed that there were 1,260 claimants locally which was 2 per cent of the working age population. This compares to the national claimant rate of 3.7 per cent.

Youth unemployment decreased by 95 claimants year-on-year to just 185 in September. This is 0.9 per cent lower than the national average.

Local MP Andrew Jones commented: “I am pleased to see the year-on-year decrease in unemployment in our area. This is alongside the news that unemployment is at its lowest nationally since 1974.

“It is important that we never lose our focus from growing our economy and creating the jobs that come with that. Each decrease is one more person earning an income for themselves and maybe for their whole family. It is a person spending that income in the local economy and supporting our high streets”.
