Latest unemployment figures.

The latest unemployment figures for the Harrogate and Knaresborough constituency show a small decrease in those claiming unemployment benefits.

Figures from the government showed that there were 1,465 claimants locally which was 2.4 per cent of the working age population.  This compares to a rate of 4.3 per cent nationally – ten lower than in January.

Youth unemployment rose slightly to 200 claimants from 185 in January.  This is a full percentage point lower than the national average.

Local MP Andrew Jones commented: “It is encouraging that unemployment still remains on a downward trend – even if the reduction was only small this month.

“I am grateful for the work the team at the Job Centre do supporting jobseekers.  My team of caseworkers met the team there earlier this week. I was particularly impressed by the success of the Kickstart scheme with 163 young people finding jobs with local employers.”
