Following a consultation carried out at the back end of last year Tesco has formally submitted its proposals to Harrogate Borough Council for a new supermarket on the former gas works site on Skipton Road.
The site will include a petrol station with the wider works also including a new roundabout. North Yorkshire County Council’s work to replace the bridge over the Oak Beck and widen the road is also set to begin shortly. Commenting on this county councillor Matt Scott said:
‘I am pleased to see a proper application from Tesco come forward so it can be scrutinised fully. I believe there are benefits to this scheme – job creation and the potential to reduce journeys up Skipton Road to supermarkets on the other side of town.
But I do see too that some have serious reservations about the biodiversity of the site and surrounding area, the impact on local traffic and on other factors such as noise. It is for these reasons that I ask all residents with concerns to ensure they share these with the council so that they can be taken into account.’
