The government has announced that it is delaying the North Yorkshire County Council elections due in May 2021. This is because they are consulting on putting a new council in place to take over all the duties of North Yorkshire County Council and Harrogate Borough Council.
A consultation will be launched on the size and shape of the new authority soon but there are two proposals. The first is for a mega-authority based on the whole of North Yorkshire with a much smaller neighbouring City of York council. The second proposal is for two evenly-sized authorities based on the east and the west of York and North Yorkshire.
The Police, Fire and Crime Commissioner elections, which were held over from 2020 due to COVID-19, are still planned for this May.
