Council launches local plan call for sites.

North Yorkshire Council is asking land owners, developers and others to submit sites for consideration as the formation of a new county-wide local plan continues.

The call for sites spans the full remit of the local plan meaning they could be put forward for employment, retail, leisure, energy generation and biodiversity in addition to housing.

The council is asking anyone submitting a site to set out as much information as possible and take into account their suggestion’s impact on local health services, schools, sewerage systems, wildlife and roads.

The council has reiterated that this process is different from the planning application process and it expects more sites to be submitted than will be required for the plan. Sites will be assessed with unsuitable suggestions rejected prior to a draft plan being taken forward.

The council aims to have a plan adopted in late 2028 and will provide an opportunity for comments on drafts at a future local consultation stage. Individuals and communities will also be able to comment on sites planned for rejection.

Commenting on this Andrew Jones MP said: “I know that housebuilding is a major concern for many people locally.

“It will be a significant task to put together a local plan for the whole of North Yorkshire and I am pleased the council will provide opportunities for individuals and communities to comment on draft proposals as the plan is put together.

“I will continue to follow progress of the plan closely as I am aware of sites, such as Knox Lane in Harrogate and Water Lane in Knaresborough, in the current plan which councillors now hope to remove. There will be competition for that across the county and it will be important for local people to have their say and put forward the best possible case for such a decision.”
