Northern Powergrid upgrading Harrogate electricity cables.

The company is investing to ensure future demand is met for homes, businesses and transport. The project will involve road and pavement closures, as well as on-street parking suspensions, at various points between now and September.

The Powergrid’s contractor, OCU, will also be upgrading several local sub-stations to boost capacity for new connections to support economic growth. The map above sets out the overall route while specific closures will be listed on www.one.network.

The contractor has committed to providing access for businesses and residents in addition to signposting diversions where applicable. The Powergrid has said it is not planning to turn off anyone’s power and it is unlikely they will need to enter premises.

Pedestrian access will also be maintained while work will be undertaken for businesses to continue to receive deliveries as usual.

Commenting on this Andrew Jones MP said: “While no one likes to see temporary traffic lights this work marks further investment in our town following the mass upgrade of gas pipes and the rollout of superfast broadband from which I know many local homes and businesses benefit.

“Having worked with Northern Powergrid on another issue in Knaresborough I have found them to be approachable and keen to resolve issues wherever they crop up.

“The organisation is hosting a drop-in session for businesses on 23 April in Harrogate town centre. If you are a business owner in Harrogate who would like to attend but do not have the details then do let me know and I can pass these on.

“As homes move to greener technologies and the local bus fleet becomes fully electric across the board, demand for electricity is clearly going to increase. I am pleased work is happening now to get ahead of these trends and ensure the network is fit for the future.”
